BILL RADFORD
elizabethan,s former international cyclo-cross rider bill radford, has died at the age of 70, after a long illness.
Bill first shot to fame in 1957, when as a 16 year old junior riding on 52inch fixed wheel, he won the prestigeous cyclists V- harriers championships at walsall.
In 1958 he finished 3rd in the national cyclo- cross championships at bagshot heath, in surrey, behind Don Stone and Barry Spence. The same year he won the cyclists V- harriers race for a second time and was also South Staffs junior time trial champion. However it was as a cyclo- cross rider that he really excelled thanks to his tremendous bike handling ability.
He went on to ride in three consecutive world cyclo- cross champs, in 1961 in hanover, 1962 in esch-alzette and 1963 in calais.
During the 1960,s the club had two international cyclo- cross riders in its ranks, with bill and maurice Broadbent, who was tragically killed in north wales five years ago.
Bill won the south staffs cyclo- cross champs five times then in 1976 finished 3rd in the national veterans ( over 35) champs, in spite of several punctures, behind Graham Bufton and Mick Ives. In fact that year, he was riding so well in the national trophy series that he was once again shortlisted for the world championship team, in spite of his age. However the selectors eventually decided to send some young riders for the "experience".
